    Deviation into Information – gel plate prints

    Back in March I fell in lust with gel plate printing *. (If you haven’t seen the first post about my Untitled gel plate prints, feel free to detour for a few.) I have always loved screen printing, because you can make detailed works without having the ability to draw or paint. The major problem with screen printing is space. It takes space to do screen printing. Sure, you can do it in a cramped area, I did that shit from 2001-2007. Using the pressure washer from the car wash down the street in the middle of an ice storm is not something I want to get back into.

    Back to the point, I found gel plate printing, all the satisfaction of screen printing process, with the chaos of abstract painting without having to commit to a canvas or have to have all the equipment to screen print. I watched a few YouTube videos on the subject and, well I’ve been printing for 6 months at the time of this rambling, and I don’t see me stopping. Ever.

    Bad writer also forgets that you might need a definition of gel plate printing if you didn’t click the above link. Gel plates are just big pieces of gelatin. that instead of eating, you spread paint on them and then use paper to pick up the “image “design” from the pad. (I’m not going to get into the makeup of the plates, because it’s a waste. Do a search if you really want to get an adult perspective of the plate makeup.) You can use paint, ink, dirt, cat poop, anything you want, spread it on the plate, mess with it, put paper down, done.

    Here are some of the multitudes of prints I made in the past few months, with more to come when I muster up the energy to take pictures.

    April 8th and 9th, 2011 – Process of Suffocation at The Hitone / Richard James and Friends at La Chardonnay

    Let’s start this not so magical photo tour in no particular order, just the order that the DVDs from the archives are in. April 8th and 9th of 2011, two totally completely different shows in completely different venues. Within that 24-48 hour period, however you’d describe two different shows with just a night of sleep in-between.


    April 8th, 2011 at the Hitone, ex Sports Junction, ex first Hitone –Process of Suffocation. Memphis Black Metal that will literally fight you with machetes if it becomes necessary. My buddy and I did a video for them a few years later that you can find Process of Suffocation – El Libro Negro . Goatwhore was also on the bill, but I believe those photos are on another disk that is coming in the future.

    April 9th, 2011 will find me at La Chardonnay on Overton Square with Richard James and Friends. I use “Friends” because I am unsure what iteration of Richard James this could be. He is joined by Anne Schorr on bass, and Ross Johnson on drums. At one point in the evening we get J.B. Horrell on guitar while Richard ran the bar.

    At the end of September 2006, I remember going back to a spot around the corner of Chelsea and North Watkins streets. It looks like it was where old Memphis trolleys, you know those magical hot dog shaped vehicles that took people up and down Main street, went to die. (Let’s not talk about the Madison Avenue trolley line that makes people with shit tires slide like an ice road trucker on speed.) Hot dog description aside, these trolleys looked old, weathered, and burned up. What idiot would think this is photo worthy?

    The last two pictures are from somewhere off of Florida and East Carolina streets, well before all the condos had a ton of unprotected sex and exploded all over that landscape. Sure Memphis looked like how I felt Old Detroit did in Robocop, but I was Officer Murphy and no one was taking shots at me, so fuck it. Memphis, where huge shards of glass were wired to telephone poles. I’d work for Dick Jones in a heartbeat…

    Videos From A Long Time Ago

    Back around 2000, I started to take pictures and video of the bands that I got to see. I used to use a Nikon D90 and a Sony TRV-120 to document the shows I saw. Some times I went overboard with the drinking, but I still was able to shoot pictures and video at the same time. I will never attempt to add a number to the amount of shows shot, but lets say it was a few.

    I started a YouTube channel around 2006 to get what I could of these shows online. It was a bit of work to get shit online back then, but that’s life. And so I dealt with all the fun issues of processing video on a computer that could barely run Minesweeper. A five minute clip would take around 12 hours to process and if it had any issues during rendering, it would start that 12 hour clock.

    In May of 2010, my apartment flooded due to a giant rain storm that clogged all the storm drains in my complex. I lost a few posters and some other small things, but my entire collection of shows up until that point in time were gone. Underwater. So is life…

    Here’s all the stuff I got online before it got sent to the muddy deep.

    I Noise Memphis – A Portfolio of Works

    Welcome to I Noise Memphis. My name is George Hancock. I am a photographer/videographer/printmaker/terrible musician (both electronic and traditional instruments under the name of bckgrndnse )/jerk-of-all trades. I am currently based in Memphis, Tennessee.

    This site will attempt to document all of the nonsense that I create. From beats, to gel plate prints, concert photography, and everything else that I come up with. Good, bad, in-between. If I put it up, I at least think it’s worth showing.

    Here are some of the first gel plate prints I made in March of 2026. These are the first 20 of about a 250 set of prints. Various colors and paints and materials were used. I’ll be adding more and more as I get the prints photographed.
